Season end
Sunday, February 14th, 2010Ok, so the last weekend of goose season 2010 a few of our team members had things come up and we not able to attend the outing. SO what the rest of us did was split up and try two different places and see what would happen. Adam and Brandon set up real early Saturday morning in a corn field surrounded by beans and began their quest. Mean while Shaun and Curt headed up to an energy center that has two big lakes just off to the south where a lot of birds tend to hang out and flock to every day throughout the day.
When Shaun and Curt arrived, the lake was 90% froze (imagine that, that’s how most of our season was) so we decided to travel around and look for open water. Well we got to the other side of the lake and began seeing a few birds. There was little open water so we decided that was our only opportunity. We climbed out of the truck and began out 2 mile hike into the woods that lead to the open water on the bank. This was actually on the edge of an island but the water was low enough that the island was connected to the mainland.
During the hike, birds began flying in and circling and landing right where we thought they would. We eventually got to where we wanted to be and laid in some tall grass. But at the same time, some of the birds got up off the water and flew right over the top of us and that was our opportunity to start the morning off. I forgot to mention that it was a bit foggy so we could quite tell what was flying our way, but we knew they were geese. Waiting patiently, a group of 10-12 geese flew right to us. Curt waited till they were about 10 foot off the ground and 15 feet in front of us and yelled “Get’em.” Shaun and Curt went 1…2, and 2 geese were down.
Curt looked over at his bird and yelled, “It’s a Speck!!!!” Shaun quietly walked to his bird and picked it up and smiled and said “Me too.” To be able to shoot a specklebelly in the area we live is rare and pretty hard. They tend to be more in the western part of the state, and on the coast. So needless to say, that made our season!!
In the mean time, Brandon and Adam went out and shot a few Canadians out of the corn field that same morning. All in all, the season was tough but towards the end, things started to pick up a little and we started having some success!
